This week, another intern and I discussed more options for enrichment at the New England Wildlife Center. At her last internship they used painting with animals as a form of enrichment because when they step in the paint, it gives them the sense of playing in the mud. It just so happens that this is also a very good fundraising idea, for some reason people are really into buying pictures created by animals. After getting the okay from Dr. Cartocetti, we bought non-toxic washable paint and cardstock for orphan raccoon painting! Once we had everything set up, and the rest of our tasks were done for the day we gathered a group of the largest raccoons we had and set them loose in the paint. They loved it, and guest and staff alike enjoyed the sight of raccoons playing in the multi-colored mess. After they were done we gave them a bath to clean themselves off and set the paintings to dry. They are now on sale in the gift shop at the center.
